Main task: Evaluation

Evaluation

My brief for this web site was to design and create a web site for a charity which I chose myself. On my web site i had to include a logo, designed myself, a navigation bar also designed by myself, that worked and also has a roll over colour. It also needs to include a video linking to the charity i have chosen and a link to another web site. The charity i looked at in more detail was PETA, this is because they work for a good cause and i know more about that chairty than i do others.

My web site follows a lot of conventions, for example, the navigation bar being at the top of the web site and the logo being in the top left. I have followed a lot of web conventions because it works well in a web site, and is also easy for the user to know how to get around a web site, like I specified I would try to achieve in my rough designs. I did follow a simple layout like the web sites I have analysed including RSPCA and the original PETA web site.

I have tried to make my web site readable to all social groups, it is especially aimed at people in education as I added a tab on the navigation bar just for people in school to learn about the charity I have chosen. This is why it is best to follow the conventions of web design because otherwise children would not understand how to navigate around my web site.

So, my audience for my web site would be primary and secondary school children, as I have not used complex vocabulary on my web site and as I have already said, I made a tab for educational purposes. However, I would also be aiming my web site at people older than secondary school, as there is a donate page, which is usually done my debit card. (could also be done by cheque, cash etc.)

To attract the audience, I made a very eye catching logo, which would easily be remembered because of its individuality. I also made the writing quite bold, to attract the user to look at the writing and read the chairities name. I also used a blue border around the information which matched the colour of the navigation bar and makes important information eye catching.

I also think that the logo I have designed for my animal charity web site looks a lot better thank my preliminary tasks logo, as it is more stylish, eye catching and pleasing to my audience. Also, using a video has made my web site look more professional, this is because it would take a more skilled web designer to make a good video relating to the charity, therefore looking like it has more money put into the making.

To distribute this media product i would publish it on the internet, people could put the web site html in or they could search it on a search engine like Google, Bing, Yahoo, AskJeeves etc. Being able to search the web site i have produced, it gives me a better chance of people using my web site. They would distribute my web site because it is informative to the audience and also helps animals in need.

To improve the ranking on a search engine like google i should firstly ignore spam, as this is a waste of money most of the time and would rarely move my web site up in the ranking.
I could also use key word phrases, for example, to find my web site on google search, i would type in PETA charity, PETA Education or PETA Donate. By using different key phrases for each web page i have made, it gives me a higher chance of people clicking onto my web site.

Also, the first paragraph on the web page needs to be strong, this is because google only looks through a few hundred words on the web page, so making it strong gives a higher chance of being ranked higher on google search. My opening paragraph is about helping animals, which my whole web site is about, therefore if they person typed in how to help animals, my web site could come up on the search engine on a high rank because i talk a lot about the welfare of animals.

One of the biggest things google look at is the links that your web site use. If i wanted a higher rank on google search engine, i should of made a link saying 'click here to read more about animal welfare'. But i put ' click here to read more'. Therefore, making my web site a lower rank to other web sites who have specified what their web site is.

Linking my web site to other sites also gives my web site a higher rank, i have already got one link which is to my blog but if i got more links to other web site which relate to my own charity web site, i could get a higher ranking. Linking my web site to social net working sites like facebook would also effect my ranking, as this is one of the most popular social networking sites on the web.

Strong, effective web pages are what google looks for when they are ranking web sites on their search engine. To also get a higher ranking, more web site views are what google look for, which is good because i have an Educational link on my navigation bar, which would be used by primary and secondary school children daily, making my web site views high.

I have learnt a lot by making this web site, firstly I learnt how to use a web making program, web plus 10, and also how to make a video on the program Movie plus 5 and Movie maker. It was more difficult to make the movie, as I have to collect a lot of observational photo's and videos myself and place it onto individual clips. The hardest part was converting the file format so that it would play on my web design.
However, i finished the making of the video and i think it has worked really well, as it starts when the user clicks onto the Home page, and loops round, which looks better as it is continuous rather than stopping , keeping the home page animated.

I have learnt a lot if I look back over my preliminary task I did before this main task web site. Firstly, I know the colours work better on my web site I have made for my main task, better than the one before, as the simplicity makes my web page look more professional and simple. I researched colour theory a lot however, I did not use these theory's in my Final web site because it would not of looked as good as my web site does now.

The photographs I have taken for my main tasks web site are also my own, observational photographs of animals. However, the photographs i used in my preliminary task were not my own observation photographs, as i found them on numerous school web sites. I learnt that capturing my own photographs not only makes my web site look better, it also looks and feels more realistic compared to my preliminary tasks photographs.

Also, by looking at composition and photographs it has also made my web site photographs look better, as I took into account what I had researched, with the different angles and what to include in the photograph, for example, to use a simple composition, I captured a close up

It is clear by reading the above evaluation that i have not tried to challenge any web conventions, which is because i want people to know how to get around the web site and i don't want it to be confusing otherwise, the target audience would not know how to use it. By analysing other web sites at the start of my main task, it has helped me with ideas on how to design my own web site well.
If i had the chance to make this web site again, i would pay more attention to small details, for example, on the About us web page, i could of made the fake link at the bottom a real link, therefore making the web site more realistic. And, i would also make the Donation button on my donation page a link, which also makes it realistic and would give a more professional look.
Overall, i feel like my web site has worked well because i used idea's from a real animal charity's website like layout of the PETA web site. And, i also followed a lot of the web conventions, which makes the web site more realistic and helps the audience navigate around the web page.

I made this a link to my blog, which was cumpulsory in the making to my web site. I made this link because it was to see more information about the web site and what research I went into to make it. I also made it bold by using a brown background (matching the colour of my logo), and using bold writing so that it stood out from the rest of the information on my web page.

This is a link I made on my home web page, which links to my about us web page, this i linked these together because the About us web page has more information for the audience. By having this link in a different colour, it stands out from the page, attracting the users eye, and also it meets web conventions. It meets web conventions because on all web sites links are in different colours.

I included small award photographs I found on google images, and I also edited certain ones to fit with my animal charity. I used these on my web site because it looks more professional, and also looks like the charity is real, well known and doing good, otherwise it wouldn't earn awards.

Media Diary Post

I have now finished creating my main task website for the charity of my choice which was PETA. The post before give a lot more information on each web page as I went into a lot of detail such as why I captured my own photographs and how they work well on my website.

I personally think that the website I have created for the charity PETA looks great as it is exactly what I wanted as it looks clean and professional. I have also included an education web page as I have stated that I wanted to have a wider audience for this website and for the younger generation to understand that animal cruelty is bad and why it is. The use of the three colours blue, brown and white has worked very well and so I am glad I broke the web convention of the colour schemes that people use on their own websites.

I am now going to analyse my website in much more detail than this.

Final Charity Website

To construct this web site, I firstly made a master page, where I placed the logo, navigation bar, blue border and charity awards on, as I wanted these things to be on the web site in the same place.
To produce a video, I filmed my dog a couple of times, I also added in photographs of her and the PETA logo. I then put a voice over on this video. I did this using Movie Maker, as it was much easier to put the video together using the time line view, as then I was able to see the audio.

Above is my home page, I included a video, a photograph denotes a dog looking up at the user, with a small section of writing telling you what the charity is about. I also added a highlight colour onto my navigation bar, it is blue originally, and when you highlight over it, it is the same colour brown as the hair on the dog which is my logo.

For this about us web page, I added a quote into it to make the web site look more realistic and believable. I also added a dark blue border on the photograph of the dog to make it stand out against the white background. I also added a little writing to the left of the website and the writing at the bottom of the website to make it look much more realistic like a website which is on the internet.

This is my about us web page, I added different observational photographs, an about us title, as the user may not know which page they are on. To highlight certain sections of this page, I used a brown coloured text box, and also bold writing, as it is something I would want the audience to look at and notice. The first photograph denotes a lot of cows behind fencing, and the other denotes a dog playing with a toy.

This one was made in a similar way, with blue borders to highlight the photographs and make them bolder, I also added a link which I have spoken about.

This is my education web page, to make it look more interesting I used two different coloured writing, as the white stood out from the brown well compared to black and also matches in with the colours I have already used, seeing as I wouldn't want to use too many colours as it wouldn't look as good and it would look badly constructed.

I firstly made the donate box, as this is the most obvious thing to include on a web site, I then added all the text to thank the person for donating and offering them a chance to become a member.

This is my donate web page, I made a donation box to make this page look more realistic like the original PETA web site.

Media Diary Post

I have finished my rough designs for the charity website I shall be creating soon. I drew them and then outlined them with a black pen. I then scanned them in onto Photoshop. I added a little colour to my rough designs to show what colour I want on my final website.
I have looked a lot into the colour theory and decided to break this convention by using the colours blue, brown and white. I chose to do this as I felt that I did not dare break the conventions of a website in my preliminary work. This stopped me from maybe gaining my full potential in creating web sites as this colour scheme may look better than a conventional colour scheme. I chose the three colours also because the logo uses the brown and blue, with a white background, which I think will make the web site look really simple and professional.

From now onwards I shall be creating my final main task website for the charity of my choice which is PETA. This is going to be really good and fun to make as I am breaking a few conventions of web design and I aim to make it much better than my preliminary task website for a school of my choice.

Rough designs for my final Website

These are my rough designs for my final website. I chose to follow a lot fo the conventions of a normal website by:
  • Putting the logo in the top left corner of the web page, which is seen in most websites
  • Placing the navigation bar at the top of the web page, which makes the web page more manageable and easier for the public to get around
  • Putting important information before the fold on the web page, making it easier to read and more eye catching.
I chose to use the background colour as white, this is because a lot of the other charity websites have used this layout and they also look very professional and they also seem to look like they are a more, well known charity, as RSPCA, PDSA and also the original PETA website follow this layout.

The audience I have aimed my website at would want the sight to be easy to get around, so if I had a lot of bright colours, if I used analogue colours, Split complementary colours and also Triad colours, I feel that the web page would be too bright and harder to take in, using white and the same shade of blue that is in my logo, it would be easier to understand.
Also, as the blue is the same colour as my logo, I feel as though the web site would follow the same trend and all tie in together.

For a highlight colour, and also some titles of articles and words, I would use the shade of brown which is the colour of the dog, as this also ties in with the logo and would make the web site look professional.

Media Diary Post

I read the feedback I was given when I did my market research on the logo's I created using Facebook. I chose which logo had the best feedback which was the second logo I posted on my Facebook. The only bad comment which was made on this logo was that the charity's name needed to be larger for it to be eye-catching and also look better next to the picture of the dog.
So, I went back onto Photoshop and enlarged the writing next to the picture of the dog, which means that this logo had no bad comments.
As I have said, by doing this market research it has helped me improve the design of the logo, and it has also helped me learn that criticism on my work can sometimes be a good thing, and can be the different between a good logo and a bad logo.

I have just started the rough designs for my charity website, these will help me when I come to actually create my website as I will know where I wanted everything to go and also shows that I have thought a lot about my work.

Final design of my logo

The market preferred this logo to the rest, before I made the necessary changes, the original logo was entertaining, the wording of PETA was nicely placed, a lot of people liked the writing being down the side of the logo instead of over the dog or on the jumper.

They also said that the logo could be improved by enlarging the size of the wording PETA. I then went back onto Photoshop and manipulated the logo so the lettering PETA, was bolder than it was before I edited it. By making this tiny change, I now think the logo appeals to the market more, as I took into account their advice when I researched it by putting it onto facebook.

By doing market research on logo's, it has really helped me to decide on which logo to choose and also what changes I can make to the logo which I felt as though got the best review by the public.

Media Diary Post

I am now looking at other design elements within my website and have now chosen to focus on what types of photographs I will use on my website. I am going to capture my own observational photographs as I want to website to be as personalized as possible. So, I looked at the design elements of creating a photographs such as the rule of thirds and non-verbal communication. I captured my own photographs in this section of work to show that I understand the design elements and also show that I am going to be capturing my own photographs when I come to create my own website.

After I had looked at the design elements such as photographs, I then moved onto an important design element which is colour theories. There are certain guidelines that many web designers follow to make websites look good with different colours combined on the web page. I researched things such as what one, two or three colours fit well together. By doing this piece of research it has helped me to understand what colours I should and shouldn't use when I come to creating a colour scheme for my website.

I have listened to the feedback I received from the market research I did of my logo's using Facebook, and I will be showing my final logo design in the next piece of work.

Colour theory

There are certain guidelines that can be followed to make a website colours look good when combined together.
One thing that can make your website look good or bad is the amount of colours you use. too many colours will make the website look messy and cluttered and also hard for the audience to get around the site, which is often the case on websites, but too little colours will make it look plain and boring. The amount of colours that will work best on the website would be three.

Primary colour
This colour will be on a lot of the website, setting the tone for the website.

Secondary colour
This colour is to back up the primary colour, It could be a shade darker or lighter than the primary colour.

Highlight colour
This colour would contrast more to the primary and secondary colours. It is used to highlight important parts of the website but not too much.

basic color wheel
This is the colour wheel, which is helpful because it helps to understand which colours combine well.

Analogue Colours
The Analogue colour is the colours which are on either side of a given colour. A secondary colour, which is usually a shade darker or lighter than the primary colour, is most likely to be an analogue colour.

Complementary Colours
Complementary colours are directly opposite from one another, which are contrasting, making them stand out against each other in web design. These are good to use as highlight colours because the contrast makes it easy to see what you are highlighting.

Split Complementary colours
The split complementary colours are the colours next to the analogues compliment colour as the diagram shows above. These colour theory gives a high contrasting web page. However, this way is less extreme than using Complementary colours itself.

Triad colours
This colour theory is the colours equidistant from each other on the colour wheel.

Design elements

Eye Flow

Elements in the scene that guide the viewer's eye through the frame.

I simply used a piece of white paper shaped to look like it was fading away into the background, making your eyes wander from the bottom left of the photograph up to the top right.

Dominant Element

Usually one main subject in the image, It could be one object or a relationship.

This photograph denotes a phone, simply placed on a background of white. To show that the phone was the main object in this photograph, i raised the contrast of this photo using photoshop.

Simplicity

Uses the essential things to make up a photograph.

This photograph denotes a tick, I drew a tick onto some white paper, this is a very simple image and didn't need anything else in the photograph to know what the photograph is about.

Balance

It cant be symmetrical, asymmetrical, subtle or obvious.

I cut a piece of paper into two strips and symmetrically laid them out onto a black piece of paper.

The Rule of Thirds

  • Subject takes up 1/3 of the photograph

  • Subject takes up 2/3's of the photograph
These two photographs denote a person, simply standing in different position to show different compositions.

The Diagonal Rule

One side of the photograph is divided into two sections. The adjacent side is divided so that lines connecting to the resulting points form a diagonal frame.

I used two strips of paper and made them connect in the middle of the photograph.

Non Verbal Communication

  • Expression

This photograph denotes a person showing a wierd facial expression to make it clear why i have taken that photograph.

  • Eye contact
  • Still or moving
This photograph denotes the person making eye contact to the camera and is also very still, so I could take the photograph from the floor.
  • Clothing
  • Touch
  • Body movement
To convey touch, he denotes reaching out to the camera like he was touching it, he is also moving which looks like he is getting closer to the camera.

Positional Communication
Relationship between actors in a photograph

  • Reciprocal
I got them both to turn towards each other which denotes what reciprocal means easily.

  • Divergent
I made them look at the camera, away from each other.

  • Object
By using a remote control and getting them to both look at it, draws attention to the object.

  • Semi-reciprocal
By making one look at the other, and the other looking a different way, it denotes all the attention onto the person on the left.

Media Diary Post

As I said in the last diary post, I uploaded my logo's onto Facebook to receive people comments such as if they liked it and if they disliked it an why, and also their opinions on them.
The first logo received good comments as it was simple and professional looking however, it was a very typical logo which is why I would not use it.
The second logo had the best review, the only common statement made for this logo was that the writing PETA needed to be larger, which is why I will enlarge it when I come to put it onto the website as this is the logo I have chosen to use.
The third and fourth logo also had a lot of good comments however, people did not like the composition as the name of the charity was not bold enough or did not look good.

By doing the market research, it has helped me to decide which logo to use as the good comments helped me to choose. I also liked getting the good feedback for the work I have produced, making me feel like I am web designer.

Market research

To gain market research, I uploaded my designed logo's onto facebook to get the opinions from others. I asked them to comment on which one they liked best and maybe also reasons why they do or don't like it.

The good responses I got from this logo was that it was an effective looking logo, easily recognisable and there are only two colours used.
The bad response I got from this logo were that it was similar to other logo designs, which would not be good for the charity I am focusing on as they need to be recognised and original.

A lot of the market did like this logo, the good points were; the picture is original and entertaining, the wording of PETA is nicely placed, a lot preferred the writing down the side rather than over the dog or on the dogs jumper.
They also said that this logo could be improved by making the lettering of PETA larger, therefore making the logo more bold.

By having the different coloured PETA logo, they have said it makes it hard to distinguish the logo and writing from a distance, and also that the writing underneath the dog reminds one person of another charity. This logo had not got any good reviews about it, because of the positioning of the writing.

This logo is also said to look good. However, some thought the writing should be bolder against the blue jumper, as it is also hard to distinguish. It is also said that the dog could of been positioned differently, or even manipulated black and white, just showing the dog in black, its eyes in white, also its joints in white and the name PETA in white.

Overall, after reading the comments I had got on facebook about the four different logo's I have designed, I feel as though the second logo had got the best review from other people. This is because they liked the positioning of the lettering PETA, they liked the quirky design of the dog, and my website is aimed at people who are learning and are in education, so a logo with a novelty dog would be good and remembered.

To improve this logo I can take into account what the comments had said about making the logo larger, therefore making it more eye catching and very appealing to the public.

Media Diary Post

I have recently researched into what makes a good logo and why. by doing this I learnt that it is definitely better to use two colours on a logo, as otherwise more colours would make the logo look to busy and it is also an expensive thing to do if your in the industry.
The creator also has to make the logo quite simple, as a detailed logo would be very hard to duplicate onto different products such as magazines and clothing, it will also take a lot of precious time to create.
Even though it is not the best idea to create a logo with a picture, I really want to as it will make the logo very diverse in comparison to other logo's I have seen and analysed. I chose to do this as my website is aimed more at the younger generation, and so when they see they logo with the picture on it, they will instantly recognize it. I will not include a strap line on the logo I am going to create otherwise it will clash with the picture and make it look too busy. I will also use two colours as I have learnt that this colour scheme makes a logo look clean and professional.

Once I had looked at what makes a good logo, I then drew rough sketches of what I want my logo to look like, experimenting with compositions and even a totally different logo. Once I had done this i then drew detailed drawings and outlined them with a black pen. I scanned in the designs onto Photoshop and then started to add colour and the charity's name. This was really fun to do as I liked manipulating the logo's using different colours; filters and different fonts for the charity's name.

Now that I have finished them, I am going to upload them onto Facebook and ask people to give their opinions on each logo, covering areas such as: if they like it or don't like it; where the font should go and what improvements I should make.

Rough designs for my logo

This is the first logo design i made.

The second logo.

The third logo.

The fourth logo.

I designed four logo's for my website, three are quite similar and the fourth is different. I did three quite similar to see if they look different or better than the one before. The last logo was made to see if a more simple logo would work better on my website.

What makes a good logo?

To make a good logo, it would have to look good on the web page, newspaper and even on merchandise, for example, the Dogs Trust logo, PDSA's logo and RSPCA's logo all use two colours, meaning it wouldn't be too expensive to reproduce onto business cards, clothing and letters.
These three logo's look better than IFAW's logo because this logo uses three colours which looks too busy. Another downfall to the amount of colours IFAW uses is that using more than two colours can also be expensive, especially if you are printing the logo on letters, magazines and clothing.

The picture IFAW has of the hands in the shape of a globe would be hard to duplicate because it would be difficult to draw the hands in the exact shape and place, having more detail in the hands would also cost more to reproduce.

The logo also needs to be easy to make, if it was too hard to construct it would be too time consuming, too complicated to look at and it could also get plain looking after a while, it would also be hard to recognise if you saw it on a sign post.
The dogs trust logo shows a picture of a dog, which is simply made, it can also be duplicated easily and would look good on the side of lorries and power points.

Also, a good logo should have a picture, the name of the logo and it can also have a strap line, which usually comes after the name of the organisation. None of the logo's I have looked at have all three of these things except for IFAW's logo, however I feel that this logo looks too busy and would look better without the strap line or picture. PDSA's logo works well without a picture, as the word PDSA is easily recognisable.

However, for my logo I would like to include a picture and also the name of the organisation PETA without a strap line, because of my target audience being primary and secondary school, the picture would appeal to them more and they would recognise the logo easier.

For a logo to be seen easily, a rectangular shape would be easier to read than a square or any other shape. It's also easier to put onto web design and documents.
Another good way to make a logo is to stick to the same logo, as it makes it hard to recognise the corporation when the logo is constantly being changed and confuses people.

Media Diary Post

Once I finished the analysis of four different charity websites, I created a post titled 'Target audience and Demographic profile' of the two websites I thought were most relevant to what I want my own website to look like. I chose the two websites as I liked the layout; the use of colours on the website and the fact that the websites also appeal to younger people.

Once I had finished that section of work, I then moved on to analysing the charity's logos as it will help me know what does and does not look good when I come to create my own logo for my main task which is to create a website for a charity of my choice. I learnt that using two colours make a logo look much better such as the PDSA logo, as it makes it look simple and professional.

Tuesday, 25 January 2011

Examples of four logo's

This is the PDSA's logo, it has used two very simple colours which have been used all the way through the charities web page. By using these colours on the web page, it looks professional and fresh looking, instead of having too many colours cluttered onto the web page.

This is the RSPCA's logo, which also uses the same colours all the way through their web page, and is easily recognisable because it is simple and easy to remember.

This is the logo for IFAW, the International Fund for Animal Welfare, which uses three different colours in it's logo, which I don't think works as well as using two colours.

This is the Dogs Trust logo, this has used two colours and has clearly worked which shows that two colours do work better than three.

These are examples of logo's which are similar to the animal charity i have decided to use for my own website, in some way they help with the welfare of animals like organisation PETA does.

Friday, 21 January 2011

Target Audience and Demographic profile

After analysing four different organisations which are involved in the welfare of animals, the two that I felt influenced me most was the RSPCA website and also Animal Aid. This is because I like the layout, the use of colour and also the way they don't make you feel guilty to donate. Also, Animal Aid, has links on it's navigation bar for youth's and also education, which is what I would like to include in my website.
Therefore, my target audience for my website would be primary and maybe lower secondary school, because this way it is educational to them and will also benefit people of older ages which can also learn about the organisation I am making a website for. Also, by targeting younger people it will teach them to treat animals with more respect at an earlier age and will have a knock on effect with their children.

The demographic profile of the audience would be both male and female, as i would get a higher audience rating and would also be more simple to create the web site. The age of the audience would be from 10 to 25, as this includes school children and also people who would be more likely to take their first interest in an animal charity. Also, the demographic would need to have a good job, as someone without a job would be less likely to donate to the charity, so their employment status would need to be good like a store manager and above.

This is the Dempgrahic profile of the real PETA charity, on the y axis it shows how much the users get paid, and the x axis shows the months web site traffic. this chart is in US dollars and is a rough estimate so it is not reliable however, it does show a lot of information.
This is the type of demographic profile that my own charity web site would have, as i would need people to donate to my charity like the original PETA charity.

Media Diary Post

Once I had chosen the charity I was going to make a web site for, I moved on to analysing four different charity websites in much more detail. I spoke about things such as the layout; the conventions that the charity web site had broken or followed; the colour scheme and what ideas I would gain from analysing the charity websites and then make them my own.
By doing the analysis, it has helped me to understand what looks good and bad on a website and what conventions and rules I should follow to make my own website good and interesting to visit and look at.

Analysis of animal charity websites

This is an analysis of the RSPCA's website. The colours on this website are very simple yet effective because the background is white and uses two different shades of blue, which contrast well with the background. When designing my webpage, i would take into account the way these animal charities use a plain background with contrasting colours.

This website has the usual convention design, the navigation bar at the top of the web page, the logo of the RSPCA in the top left hand corner of the webpage. By having these conventions, it makes the webpage easier to use for the audience and it also looks better as the user would know how to get around the website.
All of the images show animals or people helping animals, which is what the charity is all about, helping animals and getting them adopted.

This website looks good because of the simple layout used but it is also effective on the user. The audience would be any age because young people can read about the charity by going onto the RSPCA in action page, there is also another webpage for donating, which would usually be by older people because the easiest way to donate online is by direct debit, and you need to be over 16 to own a debit card. This website would make the audience feel sorry for the animals who are abandoned or not cared for properly because the website shows animals who are being helped by the RSPCA staff, but the website is also telling you about the animals that don't get this kind of care and attention. therefore, making you feel guilty which makes it more likely for the user of the website to donate money.

This is PDSA's website which i chose to analyse because it provides healthcare to pets. When i looked at the website, i thought that the audience of this website would be owners of pets, so the age range would be about twenty years old and over. This is because the website is about pet health advise and vet care and so it is obvious this website is for adults because children wouldn't need to know about these issues. They also have the donation box on the homepage, before the fold, making it one of the first things that the audience of this web page would see.

The colours used on this web page are similar to the colours used on RSPCA's website, blue and white, which looks good and keeps the web page looking simple. When i make my own website, i want it to look simple like the websites i have so far analysed. i would use white and one other plain colour to keep my website looking simple and professional.

The images on the website are of pets and some are being held by vets, which is very relevant to the website and the audience would be able to recognize what the website is about by looking at these pictures.
This website effects the audience by making them realise how important pet care is. By having the quote 'Her life in our hands... Our future in yours', shows that the website is relying on donations by people to keep the vets helping peoples pets.

This website also has similar conventions to RSPCA's website, with the navigation bar at the top of the web page, the logo which is in the top left corner and also the awards they have got at the bottom of the page.

This is the Animal Samaritans website doesn't look as appealing as PDSA's and RSPCA's website. This may be because of the colours used on the Animal Samaritans website, having a cream background and also using various colours for the text and background of the text makes the website look unprofessional. I wouldn't want to base my own website on the look of this website, I would rather mine looked professional like the two website I have analysed before Animal Samaritans.

I don't think this website gets viewed a lot because it doesn't look professional like the other animal organisations. On the navigation section in the top right corner, I clicked onto 'NW Kent Branch' and it seems that this is the place where the Animal Samaritans are situated, showing that it is a small organization.People who would view this website would be people who are old enough to look after an animal of their own, so they would most likely be twenty years old of over.

Yet again, this website also writes about donations, and even lists the ways you can donate on the homepage. so you would need to be over a certain age to use a debit card.
The small paragraph on what the Animal Samaritans are all about would make the audience feel bad for the neglected and ill treated animals, so this website would try entice people to donate to help people who can't pay for veterinary fees.

The only images on this website are of different animals looking at the camera, and below it says help sponsor these animals. By doing this it also makes the audience feel bad, therefore making them sponsor the charity.

The only conventions that this website has is the logo at the top left of the website, and also the second navigation bar at the bottom of the web page. However, the navigation bar is not running along the top of the web page, it is clumped together in the top right, making the page look messy. There is also too much web page, so much that when you scroll down the page there is a blank, cream coloured space which also makes me think that this web page was made unprofessionally.

This is the website of Animal Aid. The audience of this website could be any age, due to the navigation bar having links to education and youth. So, this website's audience could range from school children who are learning about animals and organisations to adults who have concerns about animal rights.
The appearance of this website is similar to the RSPCA's and PDSA's, by using a white background and a plain colour for the navigation bar and some titles on the website. The colours for this website is white and green, which again, I would like to base my own website around because of the simplicity and also the look of professionalism.
The pictures featured on this website are linked with the topic of the title, For example, the lambs at the top of the page are showing a free lifestyle, the greenery is meant to look like the outdoors. The effect this has on the audience is that the website seems to do good, unlike all the other websites, this one doesn't make it obvious they would like the user to donate. Instead of having a box on the homepage, it is on the navigation bar which links to a different page. I will take this into account when making my own web page, to not make the audience feel forced into donating.

This website follows all the conventions, like the logo in the top left hand corner and the navigation bar running at the top of the web page. I would also be doing this on my own website, ans it makes it easier for the user to get around the website and looks more professional.

Media Diary Post

I finished my preliminary website and to help me create it, I followed my design ideas and the rough sketches I created for each web page. I followed the basic conventions of a web site as I wanted to get the web site right instead of doing something that breaks the conventions. Another reason I wanted to follow the web conventions is because I wanted to aim the web site at young children, and by fitting the web site to the conventions, it will not confuse them and so they will understand how to navigate around the web site.
I included the awards that the school would have to make the parent feel relaxed and know it is a good school. I also included them as parents who are looking to put their child in full time education will want to know that the school is so good, it has awards.
I have already stated what I would improve on the post titled 'Evaluation of Preliminary website'. By evaluating the website, it will help me to create a better web site by learning from the mistakes I made and also the feedback I have been given.

As I have finished creating the website for my preliminary task, I have now moved on to my main task which is to create a website for a charity of my choice. I know of many charity websites however, my sister is vegetarian and I have seen a lot of animal cruelty videos on the charity website PETA, which led me to analyse this web site for my main task.
